אהלי תורה אהלי מנחם ~ מוסד חינוך על טהרת הקודש

מנהגי יום־הולדת

A birthday is not just another day – it is a moment of powerful spiritual opportunity. Chazal teach that on a person’s birthday, their mazal shines with unique strength, making it an especially auspicious time for growth, tefilla, and drawing down brachos.

The Rebbe emphasized that a birthday is like a personal Rosh Hashanah – a time to reflect on the past year, make a cheshbon hanefesh, and accept new resolutions for the year ahead. It is a day to renew one’s connection to Hashem, strengthen one’s shlichus, and bring added light into the world.

In Hayom Yom (11 Nissan), it is taught that one should spend time in reflection, daven with greater kavanah, and increase in tzedakah – especially before Shacharis and Mincha. These actions help draw down new kochos and brachos for the coming year.

Below is a clear and practical outline of the minhagim the Rebbe encouraged for one’s birthday – guidelines to help make this day meaningful, uplifting, and impactful.

Birthday Customs and Practices – as taught by the Rebbe

(Based on Sefer HaMinhagim Chabad, Hayom Yom, Igros Kodesh, and Chabad.org resources on Jewish birthdays)

1. Aliyah LaTorah - עלייה לתורה

  • It is customary to be called to the Torah (aliyah) on the Shabbos preceding your birthday.
  • If your birthday falls on a Torah reading day (Monday, Thursday, Rosh Chodesh, Yom Tov), you should also receive an aliyah then.
  • Please join us at the Oholei Torah
Shabbos minyan and celebrate your birthday with an aliyah and/or a kiddush.
    Please email Rabbi Mendel Levin

2. Tzedakah - צדקה

  • Increase your giving of tzedakah: Before שַׁחֲרִית and again before מִנְחָה.
  • If the birthday is on Shabbos or Yom Tov, give the additional amount before Shabbos

Turn your birthday into a source of bracha for yourself and others by supporting Oholei Torah.

3. Tefillah - תפילה

  • Daven with added kavanah. Use this time to reflect, make meaningful resolutions, and open a new channel of bracha for the year ahead.

4. New Kapitel of Tehillim - קאפיטל תהלים

  • Begin saying the kapitel of Tehillim that corresponds to your new age. For example, upon turning 20, you begin with Kapitel 21. Continue saying this kapitel daily until your next birthday.
  • As an added practice, you can divide the kapitel over the 12 months and learn it gradually throughout the year.
  • Click here to find your kapitel and begin.

5. Torah Study - לימוד תורה

  • In addition to your regular daily study of חומש, תהילים, תניא, and רמב״ם, add an extra lesson in Nigleh and Chassidus.
  • מאמר חסידות – Maamar Chassidus:
Learn a מאמר חסידות – Chassidic discourse by heart — or at least part of it — and review it publicly:
Ideally, on the birthday itself, or at another connected occasion, such as by the Shalosh Seudos the following Shabbos.
  • To arrange a Torah study session with an Oholei Torah bochur at your convenience, whether at your place or ours – please reach out to the Development Office.

6. Ahavas Yisroel - אהבת ישראל

  • Use your birthday to reach out to another Yid – sharing Torah or Chassidus, or offering encouragement in mitzvos with true Ahavas Yisroel.

  • A simple connection – perhaps with an old classmate or a mashpia – can make a lasting impact.

  • If you need assistance reconnecting with someone from your Oholei Torah days, feel free to reach out to the Development Office.

7. Cheshbon HaNefesh - חשבון הנפש

  • Take time for quiet reflection – review the past year, recognize areas for growth, and make hachlatos tovos for the year ahead.
  • You may also mark the day by writing a pan to the Rebbe.
Click here to send a letter online.

8. Hachlata Tova - קבלה טובה

  • Take on something new — a small hiddur or extra care in Torah, mitzvos, or good deeds.
Choose something practical and within your reach, so it can truly last.

9. Farbrengen and Joy - התוועדות ושמחה

  • Celebrate your birthday with simcha – gather with family and friends for a farbrengen. Share words of Torah, chazer a Maamar, sing niggunim, and inspire one another toward growth.
  • To join or sponsor a farbrengen or kiddush at the Oholei Torah Shabbos Minyan, please contact Rabbi Mendel Levin.

10. Making a blessing on a new fruit - Shehechiyanu

  • Eat a new seasonal fruit and recite the bracha of Shehechiyanu, thanking the Aibershter for His kindness and the gift of life.
  • This minhag reflects the idea of renewal – similar to the way Shehechiyanu is recited on Rosh Hashanah.
